A day-by-day protocol for your first water fast
If you're considering a water fast — read this first. This tracker is what I wish I'd had before my first one.

The goal isn't heroism. It's awareness. Print it, track it, learn your body.
DAY 1-2 · Entry
the easiest days, counterintuitively
- Morning: body thinks it's a normal fast
- Afternoon: hunger wave around 2-4pm
- Energy: surprisingly stable
- Track: weight, energy (1-10), hunger (1-10), mood
- Drink: 3L minimum, with electrolytes
DAY 3-4 · The Wall
the day most people quit
- Morning: headaches, fatigue, foggy brain
- Afternoon: the body switches to ketosis
- Day 4: the famous 'breakthrough' — clarity returns
- Track: sleep quality, HRV if you have Oura
- Don't do: heavy exercise, stressful meetings
DAY 5-7 · Adaptation
the body is now adapted
- Hunger: gone or very minimal
- Energy: stable or higher than baseline
- Mental: extreme clarity (this is the addictive part)
- Monitor: resting heart rate daily
- If you feel dizzy: sit, drink water with salt, don't panic
DAY 8-10 · Only if experienced
ask your doctor
- Never your first fast
- Daily: body weight, resting HR, mood, sleep
- Emergency: break the fast with bone broth if anything feels wrong
- The longer you go, the more careful the refeed
- Refeeding is the most important part — never rush it
